How To Series: Creating And Implementing Lists On Facebook

YoVille How To SeriesHave you ever wondered how to make separate friends lists for games, status updates, and even chat? In this article, you will learn how to create a list and how to implement them.

First thing you will need to do is decide why you are making these lists. Are you wanting to hide certain status updates from family members or are you creating a list of YoVille neighbors? Whatever the case may be, having lists is certainly a good idea. Once you decide who is going into which list, you can now start the process of incorporating lists!

Step 1: Click on the “Friends” icon to the left of your main Facebook screen. Then, when the screen changes, click the “Edit Friends” button on the top middle.

Step 2: After you complete step one, some of your friends will appear on the screen. There will be a button on the top right “Create List”. Click this. It will open up a smaller box where it will let you name the list and choose the friends to be added to the list.

New list

After you have chosen and set up the lists you want to make, they will appear on the left hand side of your screen. You will have a list of your lists and Facebook also leaves you a list of friends that you have not set to a list. This helps make sure you are aware if you missed someone you wanted to add. Also, another great point of these lists is, you can add friends to multiple lists. For example, I have a list for players that play both FarmVille and YoVille, but also have separate lists for both.

Chat

Now, how will this help you in chat? Well, the beautiful part of making lists is they are also separate in chat! If you are wanting to avoid people, you can be online but show as offline to them! These lists will appear broken up in your chat window with a green oval next to the name of the list. If you click the green oval, it will take you offline to that list but still allow you to chat with everyone else. How awesome is that?

Status Updates and Game Posts

For your status updates, you can “block” certain lists from seeing your posts. This works really well for the spam that Zynga games produce because you can make a list of non-players and avoid bothering them with all the game posts. To block a list from your status or post, simply click the little lock icon under the box. When you click it another box will appear. It will say everyone, friends of friends, friends only, or custom. Always choose custom. When you click custom, another box will appear. It will say make this visible to “friends only” which you should just leave. Under that it says Hide this from and gives you an option to type in names. When you type the name of your list you want to block it will appear in the box. If you are done, you can click “save setting” and it will apply to that particular post. If you want to make this your default setting, you can click the little box on the left hand side that offers to make it your default setting. Becareful though, once you set it as default, it wont change until you go in and manually change it at a later time.
